Eddie Howe will be looking to help Newcastle to the EFL Cup quarter-finals for just the second time in the last six seasons — but to get there, they will need to beat the side he guided from League Two to the Premier League in Bournemouth. The Toon Army are currently on an 11-game unbeaten run across all competitions, including a 3-2 penalty shootout win over fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace in the last round.

After a successful 12 matches as interim head coach, Gary O’Neill was appointed as the new Bournemouth manager at the end of November and this will be his first official game in charge of the club. The Cherries currently sit 14th in the Premier League and will be looking to make it to the quarter-final stage of the EFL Cup for the first time since 2018/19 when they were knocked out by Chelsea.

Newcastle team news

Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier have both returned to training after their World Cup exploits with England, while Nick Pope, Fabian Schar and Bruno Guimaraes have been given a little bit more time off, but are all expected to return soon. Summer signing Alexander Isak will once again miss out for his new side with a thigh injury, but he may be in contention for their Boxing Day game against Leicester.

Bournemouth team news

Kieffer Moore will be looking to put a disappointing World Cup with Wales behind him and add to the four goals he has already scored this season, while Marcus Tavernier, who provided four assists and scored two goals in his final three matches before the enforced break, will be hoping to continue his excellent form.

Lloyd Kelly has stepped up his return from injury and is back on the grass, but may not be risked on Tuesday, while goalkeeper Neto will be hoping to make his return to the team.

Scoreline prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Bournemouth
