Simply put, Napoli have offered one of the worst title defences in Serie A history. After last season’s glory, the Partenopei are languishing in eighth place this time around with just 13 wins and 49 points from 33 games. Even so, they still trail Lazio in the Europa Conference League place by just six points with a game in hand, while they’re only nine points behind this weekend’s opponent in the Europa League spot, turning this game into a massive opportunity. It’s an even bigger chance when you consider that the European places will shift if Italy gets another Champions League berth. The omens aren’t good for Napoli, however, with just one win in their last seven and recent disappointing results against Frosinone and Empoli, drawing 2-2 with the former and losing 1-0 to the latter.
Roma are enjoying themselves far more. Their only defeat in their last seven games was against surprise Champions League chasers Bologna, but they quickly recovered to beat Udinese 2-1. That run also included their 3-1 aggregate win over AC Milan in the Europa League quarter-finals, meaning another European trophy might well be on the cards. Although lifting a trophy will surely be the main aim, Roma will still be looking to keep the pressure on Bologna in fourth, hopefully closing that four-point gap. It was a 2-0 win for Roma in their last meeting with Napoli in December, thanks to goals from Lorenzo Pellegrini and Romelu Lukaku.
