Manchester United v Southampton takes place on Sunday at 2pm (UK time).

After their shock 7-0 defeat to Liverpool last weekend, Manchester United will be champing at the bit to return to Premier League action and puts things right in front of their home fans. They went some way into restoring some of the good faith in midweek with an impressive 4-1 win over Real Betis, but attention now returns to league action and the quest for Champions League qualification.

Erik ten Hag’s side made it 21 straight games without defeat at Old Trafford across all competitions on Thursday and a victory here would see his side notch up an incredible 20 wins out of the last 22 on home soil.

Southampton meanwhile, sit bottom and will need to be at their very best if they are to get anything out of this game, especially considering that they are winless in their last 14 games against the Red Devils (D7 L7).

Manchester United team news

Manchester United will be without Donny van de Beek and Christian Eriksen once more, as the pair have been ruled out long term. Anthony Martial could feature but he may not be risked to ensure availability long term, while Marcel Sabitzer faces a late fitness test.

Erik ten Hag could stick with the same XI from the 7-0 defeat to Liverpool and 4-1 win over Real Betis and name an unchanged XI for the third consecutive game, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be hoping that his performance as a sub in midweek will be enough to take Diogo Dalot’s place in the side.

Twenty-one-year-old Facundo Pellistri had an impressive cameo against Real Betis in the Europa League and Paul Scholes is pleading with Erik ten Hag to give the youngster more game time.

He’s made a case for himself to start more” Scholes proclaimed on BT Sport after the match.

“He looked so quick on the right. Straight turn, goes around, beats the defender with pace and sets the big man up for the goal. “I’m sure we can see Pellistri start next week (In the Europa League second leg). I just think with Ten Hag he doesn’t like to make changes. He likes players having rhythm in the game.”

“But with the amount of games these players have had they need a rest. Luke Shaw looks like he needs a rest, Casemiro possibly. These young players, maybe give them a taste of European football which will put them in good stead for the future.”

Former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves was also shocked at his limited game time.

“I don’t know why he hasn’t played more,” Hargreaves said.

“I was amazed how quick he was. Lots of the guys, like Jadon (Sancho) and Antony want to slow down and dribble. He didn’t want any bit of that. He wanted to go on the outside, old school, sprint past people. It’s a brilliant cameo. United fans would love to see more of him.”

Southampton team news

Ruben Selles isn’t expected to make too many changes for the trip to Old Trafford, but may have to be without match winner Carlos Alcaraz, who injured himself celebrating his goal against Leicester last weekend. If Selles isn’t back, Mohamed Elyonoussi could take his place in the side, after replacing him during that match, while Paul Onuachu could start up front in place of Che Adams if the Saints’ caretaker wants to go for more of a presence up front in what could be a miss-match against Lautaro Martinez.

Tino Livramento and Juan Larios both remain sidelined.
