The hosts are currently unbeaten across their last 18 home matches in the Europa League (14 wins and four draws), starting with victory against FC Midtjylland in February 2016 – this run follows on from losing both of their first two home matches in the competition in 2012.
As for Real Sociedad they have never won against English opposition in Europe (two draws and four losses), scoring only once across six matches. Nonetheless, they did avoid defeat in their last match against English opponents – a 0-0 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford in February 2021.
Man Utd team news
A tumultuous start to life as Manchester United boss has slowly evaporated away for Erik ten Hag who is seeking a fourth win on the bounce in all competitions. Following their recent Premier League success over Arsenal the Dutchman could make a few changes to his lineup. The likes of Martin Dúbravka, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf, Luke Shaw, Casemiro, Fred, Anthony Elanga and Cristiano Ronaldo are pushing for starts. However there’s no room for Anthony Martial as he’s currently nursing a troublesome ankle injury.
In other quite eye-opening news, Eric Bailly — who is still contracted to Man Utd but is spending this season out on loan at Marseille — recently accused the club of prioritising English players during his time at Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old joined the club in 2016 but featured just 113 times in six seasons having seen his career blighted by injury problems. He was available for much of last campaign, but made only four Premier League appearances, while a struggling Harry Maguire continued to retain his spot.
“The club should avoid favouring English players and give everyone a chance,” said Bailly. “[The club should] encourage competition in the dressing room, not just look out for some. I’ve always had the feeling that the national player was prioritised.
“That doesn’t happen at Chelsea or other big Premier League clubs. Some people take it for granted that they are going to start, and that weakens the team. Luckily [Erik] Ten Hag has a lot of character and I hope he can change that dynamic.”
Real Sociedad team news
No fewer than four players are missing for Real Sociedad this week. Robin Le Normand, Mikel Oyarzabal, Martín Merquelanz and Carlos Fernández remain at home. Though a familiar face to United’s fanbase should be there from kick-off. David Silva, who played 71 minutes against Atlético Madrid last time out, has three goals and two assists in eight appearances against United at Old Trafford, all coming in the Premier League with Manchester City between 2011 and 2019.
Scoreline prediction: Man Utd 3-1 Real Sociedad
