Heading into this latest round of Premier League fixtures Manchester United find themselves occupying seventh place on 24 points through 14 matches. The hosts suffered a 1-0 loss at St. James’ Park against Newcastle United last time out, ending a three-match winning streak and furthering more pressure on head coach Erik ten Hag who locks horns with Mauricio Pochettino again. The managers last met when leading their former clubs (Ajax and Tottenham, respectively) in the Champions League semi-final several years ago.

“Fantastic coach,” Pochettino said on Ten Hag. “I remember when I was at Tottenham we had semi-finals of the Champions League against Ajax. I think it is good to see him after four years because after the semi-final we have not had the pleasure again.”

Pochettino’s tenure at Chelsea began rocky. However, they picked up a 3-2 win over Brighton on matchday 13, leaving them in 10th place on 19 points. The Blues have failed to beat United in each of their last 11 league meetings (four losses and seven draws). Their last success came in November 2017 (a 1-0 success at Stamford Bridge).

Generational wing duel

It’s fair to say Raheem Sterling’s time at Stamford Bridge hasn’t been as breathtaking as his spell with Manchester City which saw him lift four Premier League titles.

However, the (former) England international is one goal shy of matching last season’s total output (six goals), and he’s been in good form of late, notably on the road. Sterling has either scored (two) or assisted (one) a goal in each of his last three Premier League away matches, last doing so in four in a row between July-October 2020.

Though it’s worth pointing out Man Utd is the side Sterling has faced most often in his senior career (all competitions) without ever scoring (24 games). This may be his best chance to break this particular duck given the Red Devils’ current plight. Ten Hag’s side come into this latest meeting having conceded 10 goals across their most recent six Premier League home games.

Expected to play opposite Sterling is United’s latest wing sensation Alejandro Garnacho who recently made headlines after producing a stunning bicycle kick against Everton which is an early contender for goal of the season.

Garnacho bided his time before establishing himself in Man Utd’s starting lineup and while some of his teammates have come in for scathing criticism following a tepid performance against Newcastle last time out, Garnacho has been spared, capped on three occasions for Argentina the 19-year-old has a fan in Blues head coach and compatriot Pochettino.

“He is an exciting player, young and talented,” he said. “It’s not surprising to us because we knew about him when he was in Spain before moving to Manchester. It’s good to see a young player being brave and showing the talent that he is showing.

“He is Argentinian and Spanish. He is the opposite of me because I am Argentinian-Spanish; he is Spanish-Argentinian. It’s exciting because it’s good to have these type of players for the national team and I’m excited to see him on the pitch.”

Scoreline prediction: Man Utd 2-1 Chelsea
