These two sides met as recently as Sunday, with Aston Villa ending Man Utd’s nine-game unbeaten run thanks to a 3-1 victory at Villa Park. While Man Utd earned a bye to the third round thanks to their participation in European football, Villa beat Bolton 4-1 to book their spot in the draw made way back in August.
Man Utd team news
With just two games left before the World Cup break, at the end of a packed fixture list, Erik ten Hag may look to rotate his team to avoid any unnecessary injuries. Antony and Jadon Sancho are not yet confirmed as available or unavailable, though the former may not be risked. Diego Dalot is available despite receiving his fifth yellow card of the season on Sunday, with the suspension only for the Premier League, while Bruno Fernandes is back from a ban of his own.
Raphael Varane is also out with an injury, which could mean a start for Harry Maguire in a rotated defence. Once the ever-present in Man Utd’s backline, Maguire has had to take more of a support role under Ten Hag with just eight appearances across all competitions. An unused substitute vs Aston Villa at the weekend, Maguire’s last start for Man Utd was in their 1-0 win over West Ham at the end of October – which he has revealed to be his favourite kind of result.
“As a centre-back, and a centre-back who likes to defend the box, it’s really – the last 20 minutes [against West Ham] – are really enjoyable,” he told United Review.
“Although they are really tense, it’s something that me and Licha [Martinez] were speaking about, they’re the moments you want to play for.
“You want to defend, you want to hold on to that clean sheet, do everything you can to keep the ball out of the back of the net and I think we did it really well in the last 20 minutes. Obviously, we want to play a little bit better and keep the ball better than we did in the last 20-25 minutes.
“I felt like we had good control of the game for the first 70 minutes and we lost it a little bit in the last 20. So it’s something that we’ll work on, that we won’t need to defend that many corners or free-kicks, but yeah for sure as a centre-back that’s what you enjoy, that’s what you want to do.
“You want to defend and come out and keep a clean sheet and win 1-0. 1-0s are always the best for a centre-back.”
Aston Villa team news
Aston Villa will be sweating over the availability of Leon Bailey after he suffered a rib injury in the win at the weekend, though it doesn’t appear to be too serious. Unai Emery will definitely be without Diego Carlos and Philippe Coutinho through injury, however, while Jan Bednarek and Leander Dendoncker are cup-tied having already featured in the EFL Cup this season before joining Villa.
Scoreline prediction: Man Utd 2-1 Aston Villa
