Man City vs Atletico Madrid match preview:
Treble winners Man City start their 2023/24 campaign next weekend with the Community Shield against Premier League runners-up Arsenal, with this being their final pre-season game. It’s not been a long pre-season for Pep Guardiola’s side who have only played two friendlies so far, beating Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos before winning 2-1 against Bayern Munich in Tokyo. It’s also been a pretty quiet summer for Man City in terms of signings with only Mateo Kovacic coming in for £25m from Chelsea. There have, however, been outgoings with Ilkay Gundogan leaving for Barcelona on a free transfer and Riyad Mahrez joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli for £30m.
Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, are very early on in their pre-season campaign with just one friendly played so far in Seoul. That ended in a 3-2 defeat to Team K-League, but at this early stage Diego Simeone will be more focused on getting his players up to speed. In typical Simeone fashion, Atletico have spent the summer rebuilding their defence, signing a pair of centre-backs in Cesar Azpilicueta and Caglar Soyuncu on free transfers, while left-back Javi Galan was signed for £4.3m. After facing Man City, Atletico take on fellow La Liga sides Real Sociedad and Sevilla in friendlies, before starting the new campaign against Granada.
