Man City team news

Erling Haaland made his return from injury at the weekend, coming off the bench to score the winner against Fulham, and he could be looking for a start in midweek. While some of his teammates will have an eye on the World Cup, Haaland’s Norway did not qualify, so there will be no worries about missing the tournament by returning too soon. But Guardiola has admitted that Haaland isn’t “perfect yet” and he will make a decision on whether to start the Norwegian on Wednesday.

Kalvin Phillips is back from injury too, with the midfielder believing he is fit enough to play 90 minutes, which would undoubtedly be a boost for his World Cup hopes. Kyle Walker isn’t expected to return just yet, however, while Joao Cancelo is suspended for his red card against Fulham.

Chelsea team news

Chelsea are struggling for form at the moment, domestically at least, now four without victory in a run which includes two draws and two defeats with only two goals scored. While the problems are more widespread, Raheem Sterling has received the brunt of the criticism, struggling to truly get going since joining Chelsea in the summer.

Although the Englishman is Chelsea’s top scorer across all competitions this season, Sterling has scored just five goals, with three of those coming against Leicester against Southampton back in August. In fact, since scoring in the 2-1 defeat to Southampton on the final day of August, Sterling endured a six-match drought only ended by finding the net against Dinamo Zagreb. Sterling himself recently admitted that he hadn’t been performing to expectations.

However, Potter isn’t worried about Sterling’s form, believing improvements will come as the team finds their feet.

“You can tell by his reaction he is honest. Players go through moments in their careers which aren’t so positive, and sometimes they go where everything they touch is gold, so to speak,” Potter told reporters.

“As I’ve said before, I don’t think you can zoom into the individual. The team isn’t functioning as well as we would like, and that has an impact on individuals. The work for us to improve the team and the structures.

“I have no doubt about Raheem’s quality or Raheem’s ability. He’s a proven top, top player.”

Potter also revealed that Reece James had returned to training outside but is still some way from being available for selection, while Jorginho is nursing a foot problem which could rule him out of Wednesday’s game. Kepa Arrizabalaga, N’Golo Kante, Ben Chilwell, Wesley Fofana and Carney Chukwuemeka are all still absent with injury, but youngsters Omari Hutchinson and Lewis Hall will be in the squad.

Scoreline prediction: Man City 3-0 Chelsea
