Liverpool vs Wolves live stream: Watch today's FA Cup game online | Lineups expected

Published: 19:00, 7 January 2023

Liverpool and Wolves meet for a place in the FA Cup fourth in two hours (20:00 UK time).

Liverpool may welcome this distraction from the Premier League, where back-to-back (yet not entirely convincing) wins over Aston Villa and Leicester City were brought to and end by Brentford in this week’s 3-1 defeat. They are currently seven points off fourth-spot, currently occupied by Manchester United (who knocked them out of the league cup in December).

Their FA Cup third-round fixture is at home to Wolves, who are also in trouble league-wise. They are second-from-bottom with just three wins from 18 top-flight games, having scored the fewest goals in the division this season.

Liverpool’s XI has been confirmed and Cody Gakpo makes his debut.

Raul Jimenez is back in the Wolves line-up.

Liverpool team news

Virgil van Dijk is now out for several weeks after sustaining an hamstring injury. Jordan Henderson should return after concussion ruled him out of the Brentford defeat. New signing Cody Gakpo will “probably” feature, Jurgen Klopp said in his pre-match press conference.

James Milner and Roberto Firmino remain sidelined by thigh and calf injuries, respectively.

Wolves team news

None of Wolves’ long-term absentees, including Pedro Neto, Boubacar Traore and Chiquinho, are in contention to return.

Liverpool vs Wolves betting tip from Squawka Bet

Wolves have scored the fewest goals in the league this season (11) and only Nottingham Forest have recorded fewer shots on target.

Liverpool don’t give up too many shots; only Manchester City and Arsenal have faced fewer in the Premier League this season. But the chances they allow opponents to create are usually dangerous — nine teams have faced fewer shots on target, including West Ham and bottom-of-the-league Southampton. This is reminiscent of Liverpool during earlier stages of Klopp’s time in charge and to do with the holes left in their midfield.

Scoreline prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Wolves

The last FA Cup meeting between these two teams ended in a 2-1 win for Wolves but that 2019 result signalled the beginning of a painful run for the Midlands club. They have lost all seven subsequent games against Liverpool.
