Jurgen Klopp’s men returned to the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa, extending their winning run to three matches in the league. At the same time, Leicester were brought back down to earth after a mini-winning run of their own with a 3-0 home defeat to Newcastle.
Liverpool team news
The big news for Liverpool on Boxing Day was not their 3-1 win over Aston Villa but the fact they had agreed a deal to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV, which was later confirmed and made official by the Reds. Of course, he won’t be able to play until the January transfer window officially opens, and Klopp has earmarked the FA Cup tie against Wolves next weekend as a possible date for Gakpo’s debut.
James Milner, Roberto Firmino and Curtis Jones are also unavailable but their absences may not be too long, while Ibrahima Konate is back in contention after his late return from the World Cup. Diogo Jota, Arthur and Luis Diaz remain longer-term absentees.
Leicester team news
James Maddison remains out for Leicester after suffering another knee injury, with the full extent yet to be confirmed, while Dennis Praet picked up a back problem in the 3-0 defeat to Newcastle. The Foxes are also without Ryan Bertrand, Jonny Evans, James Justin and Ricardo Pereira, with only the latter expected back anytime soon.
