Liverpool v Derby takes place on Wednesday at 8pm (UK time).
Jurgen Klopp’s reigning champions begin their EFL Cup defence in midweek against Championship-chasing Derby, in what looks set to be a fascinating showdown on Merseyside. The Reds scooped domestic-cup success last term at the expense of Chelsea in Wembley’s penalty-shootout showpiece, and Klopp will be eager to replicate that silverware-clinching feat this term, with the Premier League title race slipping away and Real Madrid awaiting them in the Champions League knockouts.

Liverpool team news
Klopp’s assistant Pepijn Lijnders has already confirmed that Liverpool will ring the changes in midweek, starting between the sticks, with Caoimh Kelleher coming in for Alisson. “Caoimh deserves it,” Lijnders told assembled press on Tuesday afternoon. “If you shoot the last penalty in [in the final], it would be a disgrace if we took him out now!”
Elsewhere, Luis Diaz (knee), Joel Matip (calf), Arthur Melo (thigh) and Diogo Jota (calf) all remain out of action, while Naby Keita is nearing a return to full fitness but will be unavailable here. James Milner missed the win over Tottenham at the weekend because of concussion protocols, but could be recalled here to bring some experience to the table.
Derby team news
Eiran Cashin was sent off in Derby’s previous match, a 2-2 FA Cup draw against Torquay United, so he serves out a domestic ban for the trip to Anfield. Conor Hourihane also recently returned from suspension due to yellow card accumulation and could be parachuted straight into the first team here.
Scoreline prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Derby
