Japan team news

Japan do have a friendly against Canada scheduled for just before the World Cup but this international break will give them their final chance to make any changes to their tactics or squad plans ahead of the tournament. Ko Itakura has dropped out from the June squad but it’s an otherwise familiar roster for Samurai Blue.

Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu is involved despite playing a bit-part role for the Gunners, yet to start in the Premier League this season, while Takumi Minamino will be hoping to use the international break to build momentum after an underwhelming start to life at Monaco. The 27-year-old is the top scorer of the squad with 17 goals, five more than defender Maya Yoshida.

USA team news

USA have already lost Cameron Carter-Vickers, Yunus Musah and Chris Richards due to injury, with the trio joining Timothy Weah and Antonee Robinson on the sidelines. Zack Steffen was also left out of the squad having only just returned from injury. Johnny Cardoso, Erik Palmer-Brown and Mark McKenzie have been brought in to replace Musah, Carter-Vickers and Richards, but USA’s preparation for the World Cup has suffered a blow.

However, Gregg Berhalter is still able to call upon the likes of Christian Pulisic, Sergino Dest, Brenden Aaronson and Giovanni Reyna.

Scoreline prediction: Japan 1-1 USA
