Inter vs Napoli match preview
Both sides come into this weekend’s game having suffered elimination from the Champions League on Spanish soil. Inter were beaten on penalties by Atletico Madrid after their Round of 16 tie ended in a stalemate (2-2 on aggregate), while Napoli suffered a 3-1 loss to Barcelona following an opening leg draw (1-1).
In this fixture recently, Inter have won seven of their 11 against Napoli in Serie A since the 2018/19 season (two draws and two losses), keeping five clean sheets, including one in the reverse fixture earlier this campaign (a 3-0 win on 3 December 2023).
Going into further detail: Inter have won each of their last five home games against Napoli in Serie A via an aggregate score of 8-2; the Nerazzurri have enjoyed two longer league home winning streaks against the Partenopei, the most recent across 1996 and 2011 (eight in a row).
Speaking of winning runs, Inzaghi’s men have won 10 Serie A games in a row, and only twice in their history have they won 11 consecutive matches in the competition: from October 2006 to February 2007 (when they recorded the competition’s record of 17 straight victories) and between January and April 2021 (11, under Antonio Conte).
Suppose he finds the net, Hakan Çalhanoglu – who scored in the reverse fixture earlier this season – will reach double figures for goals for the second time in his Big Five European leagues career (after 11 goals netted with Hamburger in the 2013/14 campaign). Furthermore, the Inter player is one of three midfielders who have completed the most passes in Serie A this season: 1424, behind Matteo Pessina (1460) and Stanislav Lobotka (1534).
Çalhanoglu’s teammate Lautaro Martínez (23) is one of the four players to have scored more than 20 goals in the big five European leagues this season (along with Kane 30, Mbappé 21 and Guirassy 21); furthermore, with a goal, the Inter striker will register at least ten home goals in each of the last four league campaigns, a tally that only Erling Haaland has currently recorded in the big five European leagues since 2020/21 term.
Since the last weekend of February (Francesco Calzona’s league debut as Napoli coach), no player has scored more goals than Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in Serie A (four each, level with Paulo Dybala), while the Georgian could score in four appearances in a row for the first time in the competition.
