When is Guatemala vs Canada? Kick-off time, referee, TV channel info and live streaming

Canada will be hoping to step up their quest to reach the quarter-finals of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup when they take on Guatemala.

Co-hosts for the tournament, Canada have already played the one and only game to take place in Toronto, dropping two points to Guadeloupe thanks to an injury-time own goal from Jacen Russell-Rowe. Having to settle for the 2-2 draw, Canada are second in the group behind next opponents Guatemala, and they will have to make sure they don’t let the off-field problems affect their play.

General Secretary for the Canada Soccer Association has confirmed that they could consider filing for bankruptcy and the men’s team may not be able to schedule friendlies later in the year due to financial issues — which are impacting the whole of the game, including women’s, youth and grassroots football.

While Canada are somewhat in a state or turmoil, Guatemala were beating Cuba 1-0 to claim top spot, already bettering their runs in 2021 and 2015 when they failed to win a game. A win here would guarantee Guatemala a place in the knockout rounds for the first time since 2011 when they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by eventual winners Mexico.

Guatemala team news

Luis Fernando Tena’s side are looking to make history and record multiple wins in a Gold Cup tournament for the first time since the competition’s re-brand in 1989.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing is expected to keep his place in the starting XI after earning his first cap for the national side in the opening game of the tournament. The Derby man provided an assist for Darwin Lom in what turned out to be the only goal of the game, before being replaced after 71 minutes.

Rubio Rubin lasted just 10 minutes of Guatemala’s 1-0 win over Cuba last time out behind having to come off due to injury. He was replaced by Darwin Lom, who missed a first-half penalty but also scored the only goal of the game just after half time. The 25-year-old, who was a doubt for the Gold Cup due to injury problems of his own, is likely to start now ahead of the absent Rubin, in what could be the only change to the starting XI.

Canada team news

Canada’s squad for the Gold Cup features a mixture of experience, youth and newcomers, with seven players uncapped before their call ups. Five of those were handed their debuts against Guadeloupe, including Moise Bombito, Ali Ahmed and Zac McGraw who all started, while Russell-Rowe and Dominick Zator made their debuts off the bench, with the former the unfortunate man to score the late own goal.

With stars Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David missing the tournament, John Herdman has a tough job on his hands and will be hoping experienced players such as Jonathan Osorio, Richie Laryea and Junior Hoilett can step up and fire his side past the group stages. All three were involved against Guadeloupe, with Laryea finding the back of the net to give his side the lead late in the second half and Hoilett providing the assist for the opening goal.
