Gateshead team news

Having made 150 league appearances for Newcastle, former centre-back Mike Williamson goes head-to-head with his former team, as manager of Gateshead. He spent six years with the club between 2010 and 2016, helping them lift the Championship trophy in his first full season for the club.

Now, in his first managerial role, the 39-year-old is plying his trade in the National League, guiding his side to Wembley in the FA Trophy last term. As well as Williamson, former players Tom Allan and Adam Campbell are also on the Gateshead books, and could both feature against their former side.

Newcastle team news

With Champions League football heading to St. James’ Park for the first time in 20 years, Newcastle will be looking to bolster their squad this summer with a few new additions, starting with Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali. The Italian created more chances than any other U23 player in Serie A last season (62) and would provide Eddie Howe with a very fluid midfield alongside the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock.

A host of other big names have also been linked with a move to the North East, including James Maddison, but some players have had to make way for the new arrivals, most notably Matty Longstaff and Ciaran Clark, who have both departed.

Scoreline prediction: Gateshead 1-4 Newcastle
