Galatasaray vs Lecce friendly: Team news, predicted lineups and live stream

Published: 8:45, 24 July 2024

Galatasaray continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Italian side Lecce in Linz, Austria, on Wednesday at 6:30pm.

With a Turkish Super Cup clash against fierce rivals Besiktas to come a week on Saturday, Galatasaray are already well on their way in pre-season, having lost to LASK (3-2) and Fortuna Dusseldorf (5-2) before beating Trencin (4-1) last time out. The Yellow-Reds are looking to defend their Super Lig title this season, so will be aiming to ramp their preparations up a notch in this match.

As for Lecce, this will be their second friendly of the summer after beating Werder Bremen 3-0 on Saturday to kick things off.  Luca Gotti’s side finished 14th in Serie A last season, but only escaped relegation by three points in what was a fierce battle at the bottom, so they’ll be praying for a more relaxed 2024/25 campaign.

Galatasaray vs Lecce team news

Galatasaray fielded a strong side against Trencin last time out, with the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Hakim Ziyech, Michy Batshuayi and Lucas Torreira all starting.

Players involved in international tournaments this summer — including Colombian defender Davinson Sanchez and striker Baris Alper Yilmaz — have been given an extended break and aren’t expected to feature in this friendly.

Lecce also had players participating in tournaments this summer, including Albanian duo Medon Berisha and Ylber Ramadani, but they could feature after exiting Euro 2024 at the group stage.

19-year-old Danish left-back Patrick Dorgu is one to watch for Lecce after impressing in a breakthrough 2023/24 campaign and with his nation’s U21 side. He may even start on the winger, as he did so against Werder Bremen.

Galatasaray vs Lecce predicted lineups

Galatasaray (4-2-3-1): Yilmaz; Dubois, Baltaci, Nelsson, Kohn; Torreira, Kutlu; Ziyech, Mertens, Zaha; Batshuayi.

Lecce (3-5-2): Falcone; Gendrey, Pierret, Gaspar, Gallo; Morente, Maleh, Oudin, Dorgu; Listkowski; Krstovic.

Galatasaray’s title defence preparations continue

The title race in Turkey last season was nothing short of brutal. In the end, Galatasaray won the Super Lig for the 25th time and the second year in a row with a whopping 102 points, winning 33 of their 38 matches, drawing three times and losing just twice. However, that was still only enough to give them a three-point gap over arch-rivals Fenerbahce, whose only defeat came 2-3 at home to Trabzonspor back in November.

Six draws were what consigned Fenerbahce to a runner-up medal, extending their long wait for a league title to 10 years. 99 points would have been enough to win the title in every other season but this one, adding to their heartbreak.

But that is the standard being set by Galatasaray right now, breaking records and sweeping away all before them. It’s been an inconsistent pre-season so far with disappointing defeats to LASK and Dusseldorf before beating Trencin.

However, with Okan Buruk slowly but surely getting key members of his squad back, the momentum should start to build ahead of that Super Cup clash with Besiktas.
