Julian Nagelsmann’s men are once again defending champions, having won last season’s competition by an eight-point margin while their hosts, who finished 11th, celebrated Europa League success at Rangers’ expense.

There’s a semblance of history on Eintracht Frankfurt’s side, against no other side has Bayern lost more away games, currently standing at 23. However, they have lost more home matches against Bayern (18) than against any other club in their history. Heading into a first Champions League campaign, Frankfurt have enjoyed a busy transfer window signing no fewer than eight players. On top of that Jens Petter Hauge and Kristijan Jakić have signed permanent deals after enjoying a loan spell at the club last season.

Among the new faces is Lucas Alario who has netted 42 goals in 126 league games for Bayer Leverkusen with two of those strikes coming in six previous meetings with Bayern. Frankfurt will also be looking to improve their home record. Last time out they could only manage to collect 19 points (four wins, seven draws and six losses) – only the two relegated sides Arminia Bielefeld (16) and Greuther Fürth (14) had fewer. Indeed, only in 1964/65 did they pick up fewer points at home in a Bundesliga season (16).

After winning a record-extending 10th consecutive league title Bayern come into the 2022/23 season without the Bundesliga’s leading marksman in five of the previous six campaigns. Robert Lewandowski has since moved onto Barcelona but the champions have strengthened with the addition of Sadio Mané who has managed 111 goals across 263 Premier League games. Elsewhere they’ve brought in Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt to bolster an already impressive defence. Their fellow Ajax academy graduate Ryan Gravenberch joins as an option in midfield.

Nagelsmann also goes into this game knowing the reigning champions haven’t lost their opening match of the campaign in any of the last 20 seasons, while the last reigning champion to start their season with a loss were Bayern in July 2001 (0-1 against Borussia Mönchengladbach).

Scoreline prediction: Eintracht Frankfurt 1-2 Bayern Munich
