Already-qualified England conclude their Group D proceedings for the 2023 World Cup deciders against eliminated Luxembourg on Tuesday at 7.30pm (UK time).

It’s been a straightforward qualifying campaign for the European champions who have so far won all nine of their Group D matches. Confirmed as the table-toppers, Sarina Wiegman will be desperate to ensure complacency doesn’t creep in for this concluding match-up as the celebrated Dutch coach goes in search of a flawless qualifying campaign at the Britannia Stadium in Staffordshire.

Lauren James to push on?

It was a bit of an odd maiden campaign for precocious forward Lauren James at Kingsmeadow in 2021/22 after trading Manchester United for Chelsea last summer. The 20-year-old was utilised sporadically by Emma Hayes in the club’s FA Women’s Super League and Women’s FA Cup double campaign, mustering only 107 minutes. But, incredibly, that was enough to earn her a place on the shortlist for the 2021/22 PFA Women’s Young Player of the Year award, which was eventually and almost inevitably won by Lauren Hemp.

Her appearance on the shortlist drew some controversy, given the scant minutes she played. But, if her inclusion was questioned, her ability certainly wasn’t. James is a creative force in the final third and proved so during her England debut against Austria at the weekend as the Lionesses ran out 2-0 victors. James, who is the sister of England and Chelsea right-back Reece, has long been tipped to make it to the pinnacle of the sport, and getting that first cap under her belt will surely prove the tonic needed for her to push on and fulfil that burgeoning potential.

“We have been following her for a long time. We have been following her since I came in and my former colleagues [were following her],” Wiegman said of her call-up last month.

“She didn’t play that much [last season], but she did play some games. We know she’s a very talented player.

“She did work over the summer, she also had a very good preparation with Chelsea, played minutes, so I think we want to give her a chance to show what she can do with the national team.”

Scoreline prediction: England 3-0 Luxembourg
