The 2022/23 Coppa Italia quarter-finals have now been set.
Inter Milan are the defending champions having beat Juventus in last season’s final and they were the first team to secure their place in the quarter-finals, beating Serie B side Parma after extra-time. They were joined last Wednesday night by Torino, who caused something of an upset by knocking out AC Milan in extra-time, despite going down to 10 men in the 69th minute. Roma and Fiorentina are also secure in the quarter-finals.
Like most major domestic cup competitions across Europe, the highest ranking teams were given a bye through the early rounds of the 2022/23 Coppa Italia, but it does work slightly differently.
While 12 Serie A teams enter at the round-of-64, the top eight get a bye straight to the last 16 meaning they enter just three wins away from the final. Before this season’s last 16 started, six Serie A teams were knocked out, including five in the first round.
But now the biggest boys are in, with Inter Milan, Fiorentina, Roma, Atalanta, Lazio and Juventus all still hoping to make their mark on the competition. Juventus will be hoping to widen the gap between them and Roma as the most successful club in Coppa Italia history, sitting on 14 triumphs overall including in 2020/21; Roma have nine, while Inter’s victory last season was their eighth.
Two big names have fallen in the round of 16, with AC Milan losing to Torino and Serie A leaders Napoli’s hopes of winning the Treble ended by Cremonese. We have also now said goodbye too the last Serie B representatives with Parma and Genoa exiting at this stage.
