Club León Team News

León are desperately seeking any kind of form at the moment. Despite sitting level on points with Atlas (9), just three points behind behind 12th-placed Juárez in the final reclassification spot (the 5th-through-12th-placed teams qualify for a single-elimination round of games, with the winner joining the top four in the eight-team Liguilla tournament) and with a game in hand on most of the league, there are not a great many encouraging signs around this group.

This side, which currently sits 16th in the Apertura table, has now lost four consecutive matches, during which they’ve been outscored 11-2. In their most recent contest, a week ago away to Pachuca, León fell suffered a 1-0 defeat. Though the lone goal didn’t come until the 86th minute, the match could easily have been settled by then, as León – who’ve not kept a clean sheet since July 21 (six matches) – allowed Pachuca 17 shot, six of which were on target.

Those in search of an encouraging note can point to León’s fully clean bill of health, though it’s clear that this side needs not only its full complement of player, but needs much more from those players.

Atlas Team News

Interestingly, Atlas’s (15th, on goal difference) last time outing, on Thursday night, was also an away contest against Pachuca. Like León, Atlas also came out on the wrong side of the result, falling 3-1. Though they’ve enjoyed moderately better form of late (2 draws and 2 losses in their last four matches) than León, it must be said that Atlas were dominated to a far greater degree by Pachuca their Sunday night hosts, turning 42% possession into just three shots (two on target), while allowing 19 shots, a whopping nine of which were on target.

Atlas have actually struggled more mightily than León to keep the opposition off of the scoreboard, with their lone Apertura clean sheet coming in their first match of the campaign, a goalless draw with Club América on July 3.

Unlike their hosts, Atlas do come into this game with a couple of injury concerns, as a hamstring injury will keep midfielder Aldo Rocha out of the lineup, and Colombian forward Mauro Manotas will be out with the cruciate ligament injury that’s ended his Apertura campaign. Fortunately for Atlas manager Diego Cocca, Jonathan Herrera and Julian Quinones, scorers seven of the side’s 12 Apertura goals, will be in the lineup.

Scoreline prediction: Club León 2-2 Atlas

This has not been the happiest of hunting grounds for Atlas, who’ve managed just two draws and three losses since their last away win over León, in July 2017. However, Atlas’s last two meetings with León have yielded a 2-0 home win (December 2021) and 1-1 away draw in the 2021-22 Liga MX Clausura opener in January 2022, in which, despite León dominating possession (59%), was very even-matched. In that match León managed more attacks (69-63), while Atlas held the edge in dangerous attacks (55-43), with both teams attempting eight shots, with León putting three on target, to Atlas’s four.

Given the sides’ recent struggles, particularly in defense, it wouldn’t be surprising for each to see this as an opportunity to rack up some goals and post a positive result. However, because of those same struggles, it’s tough to look at this matchup and come away feeling super-confident that either side’s will come out on top.

Expect both sides to be aggressive in this contest, but for that to result only in a higher-scoring version of their last meeting.
