You’d have to go back to the 2006/07 UEFA Cup for the last and only other time these two clubs did battle, sharing the spoils in a 1-1 Group B match. Now pitted against each other in the Champions League, and funnily enough, in Group B again, they will be looking to get points on the board while favourites to progress Atletico Madrid and Porto collide in the adjacent fixture.
Club Brugge team news
Vice-captain Hans Vanaken was heavily linked to West Ham in the summer window before David Moyes splurged on Lucas Paqueta, but he ultimately stuck around and even penned a new contract to dispel immediate fears over his future. The towering playmaker scored three goals in the Champions League last season and will be looking to pick up that form this week, particularly as head coach Carl Hoefkens has a few injury concerns heading into the match.
Mats Rits ruptured his ACL earlier in the summer and is not expected back until at least November, while Tajon Buchanan and Noa Lang are struggling. The latter is a particular blow as he completed 19 take-ons for Club Brugge during the group stages of the Champions League last term — with only two players registering more: Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu (32) and Alphonso Davies (20).
Bayer Leverkusen team news
Teenage sensation Florian Wirtz is nearing a return to action after rupturing his ACL back in March, but this game will likely have come too soon for him. Karim Bellarabi is also out of action until the end of the month, while Amine Adli and back-up ‘keeper Andrey Lunev join them on the treatment tables. Despite his formidable scoring form in the Bundesilga, Patrik Schick is still looking for his first goal in the Champions League, having not yet found the back of the net in 14 appearances. Moussa Diaby, by contrast, has been directly involved in more goals than any other player for the club in European competition (16) since joining Leverkusen. Gerardo Seoane will likely be turning to the Parisian for the final-third inspiration.
Scoreline prediction: Club Brugge 0-1 Bayer Leverkusen
