Club America finished top of the Apertura table but haven’t had the same success in the Clausura, currently 10th with three games left to play, two points clear of 13th-placed Atletico San Luis. How the Liga MX season works
Like a lot of nations in Latin America, Mexico’s season is split into two leagues – the Apertura (opening) and Clausura (closing). In both of the two tournaments, 18 teams face each other once to set up the final table which then determines the playoffs, or liguilla.
The top four teams in the table go directly to the quarter-finals, while those who finished from fifth to 12th enter the Reclassification where they play a single-legged knockout tie to reach the final eight. The teams are seeded in the Reclassification, so fifth faces 12th, sixth faces 11th, seventh faces 10th and eighth take on ninth.
Those teams are then seeded once again, with the lowest ranked team left facing the table leaders and so on, in two-legged quarter-finals and the seeding format continues through to the semi-final and final, which are also played over two legs. This format is repeated for both the Apertura and Clausura. Club America and Leon both had a big part to play in the 2021 Apertura though neither ended with the crown.
Club America finished top of the Apertura table, six points clear of second-placed Atlas but were knocked out of the quarter-finals by UNAM who finished 11th in the league and came through the Reclassification. Leon, meanwhile, finished third in the table and made it all the way to the final but lost to Atlas on penalties – though that did secure their spot in the Concacaf Champions League.
The Clausura has been a completely different story for Club America and Leon, however, and they are both in danger of missing out on the Reclassification.
