After a tough start to the season for Mauricio Pochettino, things are starting to look up with four wins (including a penalty shootout victory over Newcastle) from their last five games and a place in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup. Now, with Europe most likely out of the question in the league, the cup competitions give the Blues the best chance of qualifying for them next season and with three FA Cup final defeats in the last four seasons they will be hoping this is finally the year they are the bride and not the bridesmaid.
Standing in their way of a place in round four are Championship side Preston North End, who are currently on a poor run of form with four defeats from their last five. With six third-round defeats in each of the last eight seasons, it will be a tough ask for them to do what just one lower league side has done in the previous 15 campaigns and knock Chelsea out of the FA Cup. That side was, of course, Bradford City, who famously came back from 2-0 down to win 4-2 at Stamford Bridge in 2015 to inflict Jose Mourinho’s first home defeat of the season.
The Blues do have an impressive record against lower league sides in recent seasons, however, going unbeaten in their last 27 games against teams outside the Premier League across the FA Cup and EFL Cup.
