Heading into this latest round of Premier League fixtures, Chelsea has won two of their last three such games (including one draw), which is as many wins as in their previous 15 combined (including six draws and seven losses). In fact, the Blues have scored as many goals in their last three league matches (six) as they had in their previous twelve. Going even further, Chelsea’s league games have seen the fewest goals this season (57 – 29 GF, 28 GA), with Stamford Bridge also seeing the fewest of any venue (26 goals in total).

Not among the goals of late is Mason Mount, the England midfielder scored both of Chelsea’s goals in their 2-0 win at Villa Park in the reverse fixture. He could become the fifth Chelsea player to score home and away against Aston Villa in a single Premier League campaign and just the second Englishman to do so after Frank Lampard in 2012/13.

Mount, though, is currently sidelined with a bruised pelvis. He’s joined in the physio room by Thiago Silva (knee) while Raheem Sterling should return to Potter’s squad this weekend. Elsewhere no fewer than six Chelsea players are doubtful including Kai Havertz (ill), Cesar Azpilicueta (concussion) and Reece James (muscle injury).

Speaking of Havertz, the German forward recently disclosed a peculiar nickname given to him by teammates. “Some of my teammates call me Donkey,” he revealed in an interview with the Guardian.

“It’s not because of my football. From day one, I felt a special relationship with donkeys. It’s a very calm animal: maybe I personalised myself in them because I’m calm too. They chill all day, don’t do much, just want to live their life. I loved them always. And when I lost, I would go to the sanctuary. You look at the animals, see something human in them. It was a kind of recovery, a place I felt peace.”

Villa currently boasts one of the league’s most in-form marksmen. Following his goal at West Ham, Ollie Watkins became the first Aston Villa player to score in four successive away Premier League appearances since Dwight Yorke in March-May 1998. A goal in this game would see him become the first Villa player to net in five successive Premier League appearances on the road.

“He is absolutely flying at the moment,” finishing coach Scott Chickelday told Sky Sports. “In the last six weeks he has really come on again. I know he was disappointed not to make the World Cup squad and this is the reaction that you have got from him. He has worked even harder.”

Furthermore, the 27-year-old — unlucky not to make England’s latest squad — has either scored (eight) or assisted (three) in 11 of his last 15 Premier League games for Aston Villa, that being said he’s only made more appearances against Leeds (six) than he has against Chelsea (five) without scoring in the competition.

Watkins should lead Villa’s attack but head coach Unai Emery is set to be without the injured Philippe Coutinho (hamstring) while there are question marks over the availability of Matty Cash (calf), Leander Dendoncker (hand) and Boubacar Kamara (knee).
