Chelsea team news
At the weekend Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened his Chelsea account, scoring the equaliser in the Blues’ 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in what was his third appearance. The previous two games had come in the Champions League and Aubameyang is set to feature again on Wednesday, this time against one of his former clubs.
Given he made his name at Saint-Etienne and then Borussia Dortmund, not many people will remember or perhaps even know that Aubameyang spent five years at AC Milan, joining their youth system in 2007.
Although Aubameyang didn’t make a first-team appearance for AC Milan, and was on the bench just once, it was a fantastic learning opportunity for the young Gabonese forward given the club’s senior players at the time. Aubameyang would eventually go on loan four times before finally leaving in January 2012, signing for Saint-Etienne.
“I know Milan well. At that time, the team was really strong, to tell the truth. Ronaldo, [Paolo] Maldini, [Alessandro] Nesta… I was very young. That is why I chose to go on loan for a few years,” Aubameyang told reporters.
“I was just trying to improve and looking at [Ronaldo] to learn as much as I could.
“To tell the truth, he was a bit fat by then! But he was still the best. I will always remember when Carlo Ancelotti had a go at him about his fitness, he said, ‘What do you want me to do, run or score goals?’ Ancelotti said, ‘score goals’, and the next game Ronaldo scored twice!
“It that is part of the character and as a striker, you need that because you have to be strong mentally. I was just a young kid among all those stars, just playing and training. I was just trying to get as much as I can and pick up all these things in my career.”
AC Milan team news
AC Milan have their own players returning to their former club in Olivier Giroud and Fikayo Tomori, and the latter has certainly been a player Chelsea have regretted letting go. Tomori first left Chelsea for AC Milan on loan with an option to buy in January 2021, which the Rossoneri triggered after he impressed in Serie A.
Because it was an option to buy, Chelsea couldn’t put a buyback clause in Tomori’s departure which they would have no doubt wanted after watching Tomori help Milan win Serie A last season. There are also Chelsea fans who still bemoan the fact the club let Tomori leave on loan in the first place, but there is a chance he may not have developed as he has if he stayed at Stamford Bridge.
That’s because Tomori has hailed training with Zlatan Ibrahimovic for helping him become tougher as a defender.
“Training against Zlatan, you can’t really be too timid because if you are, he’ll score 10 goals against you,” Tomori told reporters.
“So you have to be a bit tougher, you have to be nasty in a sense. Obviously, having a player like him, who’s played against the world’s best, is going to make me a better defender.
“He’s such a well-rounded figure and having him in a dressing room, especially last season when he was injured for a lot of it, we could still see the impact he had. Just being there with the team, his voice, the way he sees the game, having him around the squad definitely helped us, for sure.”
Scoreline prediction: Chelsea 2-1 AC Milan
