Charlotte team news

Following an intense outing against MLS rivals Inter Miami interim Charlotte head coach Christian Lattanzio could give a couple of his players a breather though he’s relishing the chance to test themselves against the former Premier League champions.

“This is a great game to play for the club, to play one of the best teams in the world with some of the best players in the world,” he told reporters. “And so it’s a dual situation where we are, we want to try certain things but at the same time, also enjoy the moment of meeting one of the best clubs in the world, one of the best teams in the world.”

That being said, he will be without Adam Armour and Vinicius Mello, the former is sidelined with a serious knee injury while the latter sits out through a foot issue. Yordy Reyna, who bagged a brace in the aforementioned Inter Miami game, is expected to feature against the Blues and he should be supported up-top by striker Karol Swiderski.

Chelsea team news

It’s a similar situation with Chelsea as head coach Thomas Tuchel is expected to ring in a few changes from the side which started against Club America last time out. Edouard Mendy, Reece James, Mason Mount and Jorginho expected to come into his starting lineup. Conor Gallagher could feature alongside Jorginho while Callum Hudson-Odoi is likely to be there from the start. Elsewhere he could hand unofficial debuts to big summer signing Raheem Sterling. “Raheem is absolutely ready to go,” Tuchel said. “He will be on the pitch against Charlotte and we are happy about that. He is excited to play his first match.”

Sterling’s fellow newcomer Kalidou Koulibaly is pushing to be involved, with the ex-Napoli man potentially featuring in a back-three alongside Trevoh Chalobah and Thiago Silva, however Tuchel is being cautious.

“We’re a bit torn so I have to speak to him about what we do,” he said. “He did some training sessions now with us but he’s still in a very individual programme so no double sessions on the pitch.

“He trains with the team but there are players who are in the third week of preparation and on a completely different level of physical foundation so it’s not a good match for him to straight away play.

“I don’t want to rule it out completely but it’s very likely that he maybe will not play and we will not see him on the pitch.”

Scoreline prediction: Charlotte 0-3 Chelsea
