The biggest international game in South American football is upon us as Brazil host Argentina in World Cup qualifying.

It’s a fixture we get quite often given the way World Cup qualifying works in Conmebol, with all 10 teams in one round-robin format, playing each other twice. But that doesn’t make the games any less fierce.

Argentina go into this game top of the qualifying group after five games, winning four. The reigning world champions went perfect in their opening four games, beating Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru. However, the perfect start came to an end as Argentina lost for the first time since winning the World Cup, beaten 2-0 by Uruguay.

Brazil, meanwhile, are an underwhelming fifth after five games having already lost twice. It’s a bit of a shock for the Selecao who won 14 and drew three of their 17 qualification games for the 2022 World Cup and only lost once en route to the 2018 tournament. They have already conceded more goals in five qualifying games this time around than they did in 17 in the previous campaign.

It’s now three games without victory for Brazil who opened with wins over Bolivia and Peru. It started with a 1-1 draw against Venezuela before defeats to Uruguay and Colombia. Can Argentina add to their woes?

Brazil team news

Perhaps the worst news from the defeat to Colombia last week was the injury to Vinicius Junior. The Real Madrid man set up Gabriel Martinelli’s opener but was taken off before the half-hour mark with an injury, later confirmed to be his hamstring.

Argentina team news

Argentina got through their defeat against Uruguay unscathed with regards to injury, so Leo Scaloni will be able to go full strength in his attempts to return to winning ways.
