After a poor start to 2023 Liverpool appear to have turned things around and the Reds now sit just three points outside the top four with a game in hand over fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. As this is the opening game of the weekend, Liverpool could in fact move into the top four for a few hours if they were to beat Bournemouth.

Morale and confidence will be high in the Liverpool camp too after their unbeaten run was extended to five league games at the weekend courtesy of a 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United. Bournemouth, meanwhile, are bottom of the table with one league win in 10 games but they are just one point from safety.

Bournemouth team news

The injuries have been piling up for Bournemouth but they have welcomed back a few players for the weekend. Jefferson Lerma is back among the starting XI while David Brooks and Matias Vina have made the bench. However, Hamed Traore, Marcus Tavernier, Illia Zabarnyi and Junior Stanislas are all still absent.

Confirmed Bournemouth XI: Neto; Smith, Stephens, Senesi, Kelly; Ouattara, Lerma, Billing, Anthony; Rothwell; Solanke.

Liverpool team news

Arthur is back in the Liverpool squad after injury but there is still no Joe Gomez, Naby Keita, Thiago, Luis Diaz or Calvin Ramsey for the Reds, with the latter out for the remainder of the season.

Confirmed Liverpool XI: Allison; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Elliott, Fabinho, Bajcetic; Salah, Gakpo, Nunez.

Liverpool’s win over Man Utd made headlines for various reasons but one which appears to have split opinions came before the game. As the players were walking out of the tunnel, Man Utd forward Wout Weghorst was seen touching the ‘This is Anfield’ sign, which annoyed Red Devils fans and some neutrals who called it disrespectful.

However, Weghorst has claimed he did it to wind up international teammate Virgil van Dijk.

Weghorst wrote on social media: “Normally I never react on media topics, but for this one it’s worth it because you amazing Manchester United fans are important to me. So I just want to clarify the video that is doing the rounds.

“From the national team I know that Virgil always touches that sign and the only intention I had was to stop him touching it and wind him up before the game.

“As a child I always supported FC Twente, and as a proud player now for Manchester United, my dedication to this incredible club can never be questioned.

“Sunday was a terrible day for all of us, we are putting everything into making it right in the next weeks. We will bounce back together and achieve our aims this season!”
