These two sides meet in the league on Saturday but first they must face off in the EFL Cup, with both Gary O’Neil and Frank Lampard looking to bounce back from defeats at the weekend.

Bournemouth team news

Bournemouth secured their spot in the third round of the EFL Cup with a penalty-shootout victory over Norwich, and it will be interesting to see where O’Neil’s priority lies in this Everton double-header. Does he go for a cup run or look to enter the World Cup break on a high with a league victory? Or does he try to do both?

The Cherries boss does have three players unavailable for this game, with Lloyd Kelly, Neto and David Brooks all not expected back from their respective injuries until after the World Cup.

Everton team news

Everton beat Fleetwood Town in the second round of the EFL Cup back in August, their first victory of the season across all competitions, and go into this match with four defeats from their past six. The Toffees are also suffering something of an injury crisis, which could seriously affect how Lampard sets his team up.

Both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Idrissa Gana Gueye had to come off in the 2-0 defeat to Leicester at the weekend through injury, with the former suffering a hamstring problem. The pair will be assessed but shouldn’t be available as soon as Tuesday, and may be out until after the World Cup. Andros Townsend is also out until after the World Cup, while Amadou Onana, Yerry Mina and Ben Godfrey are closer to returning but may not be risked ahead of the weekend.

Scoreline prediction: Bournemouth 1-0 Everton
