Botev Plovdiv and Panathinaikos face off in the return leg of their Europa League second qualifying round on Thursday at 7 p.m. (UK time).

The visitors hold a slight advantage following their 2-1 win last time. Picking up where they left off at the end of the 2023-24 domestic campaign, Panathinaikos were two goals up when the half-time whistle blew in the opening leg. Alexander Jeremejeff and Anastasios Bakasetas found the net before Alen Korosec pulled one back for the Bulgarian side.

This will be newly installed Panathinaikos head coach Diego Alonso’s first competitive away game after taking charge of Inter Miami, Uruguay, and most recently Sevilla.

Botev Plovdiv, who have never reached the Europa League proper, want to continue their march toward history. Botev are two games into their new Bulgarian First League campaign and have picked up four points from six available. In the penultimate preliminary round, the winner faces Serbian outfit Vojvodina or four-time European champions Ajax.

Botev Plovdiv vs Panathinaikos team news

Botev got through the first match without major injuries, but their centre-back Atanas Chernev and striker Georgi Nikolov are in the physio room. Nikolov will be out for a few more weeks due to torn ligaments.

Nikola Iliev, a 20-year-old forward who joined from Inter Milan, only made it to the bench in the first match but started and scored in the recent draw with Lokomotiv.

Since Iliev scored in the last match, he will likely keep his place in the starting lineup for the second leg on Thursday. This means Christian Nwachukwu may not have a starting role in the upcoming game.

Panathinaikos had no concerns about injury or suspension after their successful first match. Some key new signings were on the bench, including former Sheffield United defender George Baldock and former Getafe midfielder Nemanja Maksimovic.

However, former Leicester City winger Tete did not play as he had just joined on a permanent deal from Galatasaray on the day of the game. But the Brazilian should be ready to debut in the second leg.

Tete could challenge Daniel Mancini’s position on the right-hand side in Alonso’s 4-2-3-1 setup. The 27-year-old was the only Panathinaikos player to receive a booking in the first game.
