The third round of Conmebol qualifying for the 2026 World Cup continues as Bolivia host Ecuador.

This is the battle of the last two pointless teams in Conmebol qualifying, but they are not in the same position. Bolivia are bottom of the qualifying group with two defeats from their opening two games, a really tough start to their qualification journey. They started with a 5-1 defeat to Brazil before losing 3-0 at home to Argentina. Things don’t get harder than that.

Ecuador, meanwhile, also have no points but they do have a win to their name. After opening qualifying in defeat to Argentina, Ecuador secured their first win with a come-from-behind victory against Uruguay. However, Ecuador actually started qualifying on -3 points, docked at the start of the campaign for falsifying birth documents for Byron Castillo in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. Peru had hoped the penalty would come into play in the previous campaign, but Ecuador escaped that punishment which would have seen them fail to automatically qualify for the World Cup.

Bolivia team news

The majority of the Bolivia squad play in their native country, with the exception of eight players. Four of those play in Europe, including Jaume Cuellar who spent a couple of years in Barcelona’s La Masia academy. However, Roberto Fernandez is suspended following his red card against Argentina.

Ecuador team news

Enner Valencia remains the main man for Ecuador, captaining the nation and scoring 40 goals in 81 caps. He’s netted more foals than the rest of the current squad combined (25), so as always a lot of the goalscoring responsibilities will fall on him. Pervis Estupinan is, of course, absent after suffering a long-term injury while playing for Brighton.

There is also a first Ecuador call up for John Yeboah, who represented Germany up until U20 level. Yeboah, who was born in Germany, is eligible to represent Ecuador through his mother — and was also able to represent Ghana through his father.

In midfield, Chelsea fans will be keeping a close eye on their duo Moises Caicedo and Kendry Paez. While Caicedo has already featured for Chelsea, Paez won’t join the Blues until 2025 once he turns 18. But Chelsea fans are already excited about Paez, who shone on his international debut.
