As we move into the final third of the 2023/24 Primeira Liga season, Benfica are sitting top of the table, but things are so close. The defending Portuguese champions are top on head-to-head right now, but have played one game more than second-placed Sporting CP. So, although they do enjoy the better head-to-head record against Sporting CP right now, they’ll also need to win the return fixture should their rivals keep winning. Benfica are unbeaten in their past 21 league games, since losing on the opening weekend against Boavista, including victories over Sporing and Porto. Last time out they beat Vizela 6-1 at home, while they know Porto await them just next week.

Portimonense, meanwhile, are embroiled in an extremely close relegation battle. Although the visitors sit 13th, they are just one point clear of the relegation play-off spot and only six off bottom. This isn’t a period where they can afford to drop points. With six league wins all season, it’s been three matches since Portimonense’s last victory, beating Boavista 4-1 at the end of January. Since then, Portimonense have lost to Arouca and Estrela, while drawing with Vitoria.

Benfica have won their past four meetings against Portimonense and 12 of the 17 overall games, only losing twice.

Scoreline prediction: Benfica 3-1 Portimonense
