Benfica will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the table to 11 points when they welcome this season’s surprise side Casa Pia to the Estádio da Luz. Roger Schmidt’s side have lost just one of their opening 19 games this campaign (W16 D2) as they aim to win the league for the first time since since 2019.

Newly promoted side Casa Pia have proven everyone wrong so far this season, currently sitting in 5th after winning nine and drawing three of their 18 matches so far in the top flight. Having slipped to recent defeats to Gil Vicente and Estoril, they got back on track last time out with hard fought 2-1 win over Santa Clara.

Benfica team news

Roger Schmidt is confident that the departure of Enzo Fernandez won’t have an affect on their title charge, as they impressed with a 3-0 win over Arouca on Tuesday without him.

“Losing a good player in this market window is always complicated, but we showed that without Enzo we can play good football,” he said

“The players are very focused on getting points and being champions, and Benfica is much bigger than any player. We need players who feel passion in representing Benfica and who are happy at Benfica. If a player decides to leave, and if someone triggers the release clause, there is nothing we can do, we have to accept it.We have top players and it will be an opportunity for other players to come. We look to the future.”

“What counts is Benfica. I’m very happy with who they are, with their attitude and passion. Enjoying playing for Benfica is very important. Benfica is a fantastic club, and now we’re going to enjoy playing for Benfica and give our best to satisfy the fans and become champions.”

Chiquinho and Florentino started in midfield in the Argentine’s absence and Schmidt was incredibly happy with them.

“They did very well in midfield, in terms of defence and ball possession. They controlled and accelerated the game at the right moments, I’m very happy for them.”

Julian Draxler missed their midweek match due to inflammation in his ankle, but Benfica are confident he will be fit enough to play at least some part at the weekend.

Casa Pia team news

Clayton will be hoping that his 93rd minute winner last time out against Santa Clara will be enough to earn himself a place in the starting XI after he redeemed himself after a recent red card against Estoril. Leonadro Leto and Angelo Neto are both doubts, while Rafael Martins may have to do with a place on the bench.
