So often in the past, this has been a battle to decide who has won the Bundesliga title. Or, more accurately in recent years, it’s been a way for Borussia Dortmund to lose their nerve and hand the advantage back to Bayern. This time, however, it looks like neither side will lift the Meisterschale, with Bayer Leverkusen remaining unbeaten and running away at the summit.
Bayern Munich won’t be giving up just yet, but they still trail Leverkusen by 10 points despite winning their last two Bundesliga matches by a 13-3 combined scoreline, crushing Mainz 8-1 before winning 5-2 away at Darmstadt.
Dortmund also seem to have finally found some consistency, winning their last four games across all competitions, including three in the Bundesliga against Union Berlin (2-0), Werder Bremen (2-1) and Eintracht Frankfurt (3-1); certainly not the easiest run. Those results have lifted Dortmund back into the top four, sitting a point clear of RB Leipzig, while they’ll still feel they can chase down that six-point gap on Stuttgart in third. Of course, they’ll be well aware of the fact that they haven’t beaten Bayern in any competition since winning the German Super Cup 2-0 in August 2019, losing 10 and drawing one of the 11 meetings since then.
Both sides might become more preoccupied with the Champions League as the season goes on given it’s their final shot at a trophy. Bayern are preparing to face Premier League leaders Arsenal, while Atletico Madrid await Dortmund.
