The Europa League returns on Thursday with the last 16 as the knockout round playoff qualifiers are joined by the group stage winners. Bayer Leverkusen were one of the eight teams to drop down to the Europa League knockout round playoffs from the Champions League having finished third in their group behind Porto and Club Brugge, and only ahead of Atletico Madrid on head-to-head.

The German side were given a tough draw against Monaco and needed extra-time and penalties to beat them after they shared 3-2 victories across the two legs. Ferencvaros, meanwhile, perhaps surprised some to top their group ahead of Monaco, Trabzonspor and Red Star Belgrade. A win over Monaco gave the Hungarian side the advantage on head-to-head after the pair couldn’t be separated by points.

History doesn’t shine on either of these sides going into Thursday’s first leg and both will need to overcome poor recent records. Ferencvaros have won just one of their last five matches in European competitions, with one draw and three defeats. However, Leverkusen are winless in their last three home games in Europe, drawing one and losing two.

The Europa League knockout round playoffs saw Florian Wirtz make his long-awaited return to European action having missed the Champions League group stage (and the first half of the season) due to an ACL injury. But the German made his comeback with a bang, scoring in both legs against Monaco and has now been directly involved in 14 goals in the Europa League since the start of the 2020/21 season – scoring seven and providing seven assists.

Bayer Leverkusen team news

Jeremie Frimpong came off just 29 minutes into Leverkusen’s 4-1 win over Hertha Berlin at the weekend – but not before he had scored a goal and recorded an assist. The Dutch full-back is reportedly fine and back in training but may not be risked on Thursday in order to assure his long-term availability, with Timothy Fosu-Mensah likely to replace him.

Leverkusen are also without Andrey Lunev and Charles Aranguiz, who are longer-term absentees, the latter having been out since October.

Ferencvaros team news

Former Everton midfielder Muhamed Besic is out for the rest of the season after suffering an ACL injury in a goalless draw with Kisvarda last month. The Bosnian has been replaced in the midfield by David Siger but he is not in Ferencvaros’ Europa League squad, so Balint Vecsei should deputise instead.

Winter arrival Owusu is also unavailable, only featuring twice since joining from Qarabag before succumbing to injury.
