Barcelona will be hoping to bounce back from their Clasico defeat when they host Villarreal in La Liga on Thursday at 8pm (UK time).

Xavi’s side lost for the first time in La Liga this season and fell three points behind their rivals Real Madrid at the top of the table, so now must be at their best to try and limit the gap or close it. Villarreal, meanwhile, ended a four-match winless streak by beating Osasuna on Monday and jumped up to seventh, just four points outside the top four.

Barcelona team news

Barcelona are still suffering from problems in defence but they have lightened in recent weeks and Jules Kounde made his return from injury in the defeat to Real Madrid, playing as a centre-back. The Frenchman is likely to return to right-back in midweek, with Gerard Pique taking Sergi Roberto’s place in the XI and moving to the centre of the back four.

However, Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen remain missing from the defence through injury, with Hector Bellerin a doubt. Memphis Depay is also injured but could be in line for a return at the weekend, or the Champions League match against Bayern Munich next week.

Villarreal team news

Villarreal are still missing leading man Gerard Moreno after he suffered a thigh injury in the 1-0 defeat to Real Betis last month. Moreno is joined on the sidelines by Juan Foyth and Francis Coquelin, but Kiko Femenia and Giovani Lo Celso do have slim chances of returning from their respective injuries – both missing the win over Osasuna at the weekend.
