Barcelona and Juventus hoped to get their respective 2023/24 pre-seasons underway before the match was cancelled.

In what is being billed as the Soccer Champions Tour 2023, European heavyweights Barcelona and Juventus collide stateside with fellow continental powerhouses Real Madrid, Manchester United, AC Milan and Arsenal. The mini-tournament gets underway on Sunday, and starts with Barca against Juve.

Xavi is aiming to build on his side’s recent La Liga win, adding Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez to an already-bulging squad, while Max Allegri is hoping to transform The Old Lady‘s fortunes after a tumultuous 2022/23 that saw the club sanctioned for breaching financial rules and finish seventh in Serie A.

However, the game was called off hours before kick-off. “FC Barcelona hereby informs that the game against Juventus FC, scheduled for today, July 22 at 7:30 PM at Levi’s Stadium, as part of the Soccer Champions Tour, has been cancelled. A significant part of the blaugrana squad has a viral gastroenteritis,” a statement on Barcelona’s official website read.

Barcelona team news

Ronald Araujo picked up a calf injury towards the end of last season but will be hoping to feature this summer ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. Gundogan and Martinez will no doubt be itching to get on the turf this weekend and make their unofficial debuts for Barca.

Juventus team news

Mattia De Sciglio ruptured his ACL in May and is not expected back until at least October, rendering him unavailable for this summer’s pre-season preparations. The likes of Denis Zakaria, Weston McKennie, Arthur and Leonardo Bonucci are all expected to be excluded from Allegri’s squad for their USA tour.
