Madrid’s Mattress Makers have been serious Champions League contenders since Diego Simeone pitched up at the Vicente Calderon over a decade ago now, but the 2014 and 2016 finalists are in the midst of a European wobble, having not won any of their last eight home games in the competition.
Porto will aim to plunge the knife further on Wednesday night, but their own form on the road to Atleti won’t give the travelling contingent much encouragement, as the Portuguese champions have sealed just one victory in their previous five visits to the red-and-white half of the Spanish capital.
Atletico Madrid team news
Hot-headed centre-back Felipe is suspended for this contest owing to the red card he picked up in last season’s Champions League quarter-final exit to Manchester City. Having not featured for Atleti this season, his absence will not change Simeone’s pre-match thinking too much, but Stefan Savic’s thigh strain may alter his defensive preparations. Reinildo Mandava, Jose Gimenez and Axel Witsel are the most likely trio to slot into his well-established back-three system. There are still concerns over Tottenham loanee Sergio Reguilon, who is continuing to recuperate following surgery on a groin issue, while Nahuel Molina will be available to Simeone with his domestic suspension not affecting continental nights.
Porto team news
Marko Grujic has missed the last three Portuguese top-flight games for Porto and remains a doubt, opening the door for Canadian summer signing Stephen Eustaquio — who spent last campaign on loan from Pacos de Ferreira — to potentially come in and partner Mateus Uribe in midfield. Luis Diaz was Porto’s joint-top scorer in the Champions League last season with two goals, so the onus on Mehdi Taremi and Evanilson to step up here is huge.
Scoreline prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Porto
