Athletic Bilbao vs Real Madrid match preview:

Real Madrid were unable to successfully defend their La Liga crown last season as they finished in second, 10 points behind eternal rivals Barcelona. Carlo Ancelotti’s side also lost top scorer Karim Benzema while Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio were also let go over the summer. However, they have made some notable signings including teenager Arda Güler and Englishman Jude Bellingham, the latter joining for over €100m from Borussia Dortmund. After positive performances and results against AC Milan and Man Utd, Real Madrid did end pre-season with consecutive defeats against Barcelona and Juventus.

Last season, Athletic Bilbao just missed out on European football having finished eighth in La Liga, two points behind Osasuna who booked a spot in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers. So far this summer Ernesto Valverde’s side have seen Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta join the club while Juan Artola, Álex Petxa, Iñigo Martínez, Oier Zarraga, Ander Iruarrizaga and Iñigo Martínez have departed. Athletic Bilbao haven’t had the best pre-season to prepare for the new campaign, winning just one of their six friendlies, though they did draw with Manchester United last weekend.
