Where to watch Athletic Bilbao v Real Madrid on TV:

  • UK: LaLigaTV
  • US: ESPN+

Real Madrid will be looking to put recent defeats to Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final, and Villarreal in LaLiga behind them and get back on track having fallen three points behind their rivals at the top of the table. They did produce a brilliant comeback against the latter however, winning 3-2 in the Copa del Rey having been 2-0 down at half-time.

Los Blancos will be buoyed with the fact that they have not lost in their last 11 league visits to teams from the Basque Country (W10 D1), since losing 1-3 v Real Sociedad in May 2019, winning each of the last six and will be hoping to continue that run this weekend.

Athletic Bilbao, meanwhile, sit 8th in the table, just two points off the Champions League places and Atletico Madrid in fourth, but have failed to win any of their three matches since the World Cup break, scoring just once.

Athletic Bilbao team news

Yeray Alvarez will miss the visit of the European champions through suspension after seeing red in their last league game against Real Sociedad, while Inaki Williams and Iker Muniain should both come back into the starting XI after being rested against Espanyol in the Copa del Rey.

Athletic have conceded just four goals in their nine home LaLiga matches this season, with only Barcelona (7) keeping more home LaLiga clean sheets than the Rojiblancos (6) this campaign, but expect Unai Simon to be incredibly busy.

Real Madrid team news

Karim Benzema has an incredible record against Bilbao, scoring 16 goals in 25 games against Athletic in LaLiga, more than against any other opponent. The Frenchman is looking to score in a fifth straight league game as he looks to win back-to-back Pichichi awards and will once again lead the line.

David Alaba and Aurelien Tchouameni have both missed Madrid’s last three matches and are both a doubt again here, while Lucas Vazquez  remains out. Dani Carvajal missed the Copa de Rey match against Villarreal with a muscular problem, but could return to the bench this weekend.
