Aston Villa though come into this week’s game on the back of a frustrating 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on the road albeit extending their unbeaten run (two wins and one draw). Man City meanwhile were minutes away from picking up three more points but were ultimately held to a 3-3 stalemate by Tottenham which leaves them having won three of six previous league matches while drawing the rest.

That being said, Villa is winless in 13 Premier League games against City (two draws and 11 losses) since a 3-2 home win in September 2013, subsequently, City have scored at least once in 17 of their last 18 top-flight games against Villa (48 goals in total), with the exception being a goalless draw at Villa Park in November 2015.

Furthermore, Villa boss Unai Emery has never beaten City’s head coach Pep Guardiola in 13 previous meetings across spells with Valencia, Arsenal and the Villans (four draws and nine losses). He’s lost his last five against Guardiola, including all three against City.

“We will win it again”

City have now failed to win their last three Premier League games while conceding eight goals. This has understandably raised eyebrows leading to some observers wondering if City are experiencing a comedown from last season’s unprecedented treble success. Guardiola though is unfazed and came out bullish in his pre-match conference.

“I don’t have anything to say about the pundits, honestly. Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t think it’s about complacency. I know the players, I know how they run. How we behave is extraordinary. I have a feeling that if we maintain that level we’ll win the Premier League. We will win it again,” he told reporters.

“He knows how difficult it is, otherwise Gary Neville would’ve won four Premier Leagues in the best period of Manchester United. But he didn’t do it, you know? Jamie Carragher didn’t win one once. Micah Richards didn’t win four Premier Leagues in a row. Never, ever. It’s never happened. There is more chance of it not happening than happening. Just one Treble before us. It’s so difficult to do it again and again. We don’t have what others have, who haven’t done it for many, many years.

“I see my team, how they fight, how they press, how they continue until the end and how upset they are after we concede. So I don’t have that feeling. Maybe, maybe I’m wrong and they [pundits] are seeing everything that I’m not able to see. But I don’t have that feeling.”

Such a response took Carragher by surprise and he made his feelings known on social media.

Scoreline prediction: Aston Villa 2-2 Man City
