The four-time European Cup winners have won all four of their previous competitive meetings with Rangers, winning both legs of the European Super Cup in January 1973, and both group stage meetings in the 1996/97 Champions League.

Ajax team news

Alfred Schreuder has big shoes to fill after succeeding Erik ten Hag as Ajax coach this summer, his task has becoming even more challenging following a host of big-name departure. The Ajax boss arrives at his first Champions League game missing left-back Owen Wijndal but should hand a start to ex-Gers defender Calvin Bassey who is the latest to represent both clubs with Ronald de Boer giving the “undroppable” Bassey his seal of approval.

“I’ve been really impressed by Bassey. He was unlucky to be sent-off in the Super Cup. He started the game well and we have already had the people who thought he was just a big lump, charging around kicking people, changing their opinions,” he told Record Sport.

“He gives Ajax strength and speed and on the ball he’s alright. Of course he can still improve on that part of his game but I think he showed in the last few games that he’s undroppable. Together with Jurrien Timber, they make a great couple in defence.

“Rangers won’t be looking forward to meeting him again. I thought he was one of the best players in the Europa League final, he was unbelievable. He’s still very young so it’s a great signing for Ajax. He has some rough edges but Ajax is the perfect place to polish those up. He’ll come under the wing of Daley Blind and be taught the Ajax philosophy, which is to play the ball along the ground and make combinations.

“I’ve seen a lot of defenders come to this club with what we call hard-feet. But by the time they leave they have soft feet. Calvin is still young and he’s capable of learning that.”

Elsewhere there shouldn’t be too many changes, though Kenneth Taylor and Mohammed Kudus are both pushing for starts. Steven Bergwijn, who is yet to score an official goal in European competition, will be Ajax’s biggest attacking threat. The former Tottenham forward has so far bagged seven goals across six matches in all competitions.

Rangers team news

Following their humbling 4-0 Old Firm derby loss at Celtic over the weekend Rangers will be looking to return to successful ways in the Dutch capital. Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who has never won in any of his four previous four visits to the Johan Cruyff Arena, is expected to make a few changes from his last starting lineup.

The likes of Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack, Scott Wright, Alfredo Morelos and Fashion Sakala could all feature. However there’s no room for injured duo Nnamdi Ofoborh and Ianis Hagi while skipper James Tavernier seeks to continue his impressive attacking form in Europe, the full-back has scored seven goals in his last nine appearances in major European competition.

Scoreline prediction: Ajax 3-1 Rangers
