Fluminense vs Cuiaba build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
Fluminense are four-time Serie A winners and have dominated the Rio de Janeiro state championship, but they haven’t won a league title since 2012 (excluding the short-lived Primeira Liga do Brasil). Last season they finished fifth, securing Copa Libertadores group stage football, but Fluminense will want to get closer to those challenging for the title. After getting through their Copa Libertadores group, Fluminense started the Serie A campaign with a tough game away at Sao Paulo, taking a goalless draw, before beating Red Bull Bragantino in the cup.
Cuiaba have never been higher in Brazilian football than they are now after one game of the 2021 season. The Dourado finished fourth in Serie B last season to secure top-flight football, and got their first ever Serie A campaign off to a positive start, drawing 2-2 with fellow promoted side Juventude. It continued their unbeaten start to league football in 2021 with Cuaiba dominating the Campeonato Mato-Grossense, Mato Grosso’s state championship, while their only defeat of the year came in the Copa do Brasil on penalties.

Player to watch: Fred (Fluminense)
Fluminense were without striker Fred for their trip to Sao Paulo last weekend due to illness, which may be one of the reasons they failed to score despite registering an Expected Goals tally of 1.53.
But the 37-year-old returned to the team for their Copa do Brasil win over Red Bull Bragantino and opened the scoring with his 10th strike of 2021. Fred was Fluminense’s top scorer in the Copa Libertadores group stage, netting four of their 10 goals including three in their opening two games to get them off to an unbeaten start, drawing with River Plate and beating Santa Fe.
Fred was also in excellent form in the Campeonato Carioca, scoring six goals in seven games as Fluminense made it to the final before being beaten by Flamengo. The striker will forever be remembered by those outside Brazil for his struggles with the national team, but at club level Fred has been great and Fluminense will hope he can get up and running quickly in Serie A.
