The end of the 2020/21 campaign is exciting for one reason first and foremost: FIFA 21 Ultimate Team TOTS cards!

Team of the Season (TOTS) cards for all of Europe’s top five leagues have now been added to FIFA 21, with the Premier League joined by La Liga, the Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1.

As their self-explanatory title suggests, TOTS cards are awarded to the best players for their performances in the season. Fifteen players per league are given massive upgrades and distributed through packs, with additional cards available through Squad Building Challenges and Objectives.

So, of the TOTS cards released for Europe’s top five leagues, who do you need to try first? And which underwhelming entrants should be avoided? We asked competitive FIFA player Josh Buchanan for the lowdown.

Josh Buchanan – who you can find on Twitch here – is a FIFA Ultimate Team Verified Player on Xbox who has twice achieved a Top 200 finish on FIFA 21 Weekend League, regularly hitting Elite by recording 23 wins or more.

Premier League FUT Team of the Season

Most exciting card? It has to be TOTS Marcus Rashford, rated 93, costing around 2.5 million coins. With 99 maxed-out Pace and Shot Power, followed by five-star Skill Moves and four-star Weak Foot, he is everything you need in a player and more. He is very versatile and can play as a striker, CAM or both wings. Right now, he is one of the best players to use in FIFA.

Biggest surprise? Leicester City’s Harvey Barnes, with his high attacking work rate, 97 Pace, 95 Finishing, 96 Long Shots and the added upgrade of his Skill Moves from three to four stars. This has created a player worthy of playing striker in any team. He is an absolute steal at 500k, too, and I would advise anyone to grab him.

Card to avoid? Chelsea fans might not like this but, although he is currently one of the most in-form attacking midfielders in world football at the minute, Mason Mount is definitely a card to avoid. He is currently 92-rated and only 200k, but his Weak Foot and Skill Moves are only three stars, meaning for a creative midfielder he isn’t really that creative in-game, has limited skills and only one foot. It’s a card you don’t want in your current team.

La Liga FUT Team of the Season

Most exciting card? Of course, it wouldn’t be anyone else other than one of the greatest of all time, Lionel Messi. The TOTS card is one of the highest-rated players in the game with a rating of 98. Only Pele is higher, at 99. Messi’s Dribbling, Shooting and Passing are all 96+, making him the ultimate attacking midfielder. He costs around 3.2 million coins, which may seem pricey, but he’s never going to be cheap now, is he?

Biggest surprise? One of the biggest surprises has to be how good the TOTS Luis Suarez card actually is.  He is rated 95 with four-star Skill Moves, four-star Weak Foot and all in-game attacking stats at 90 or higher. Plus, with Shooting as a standout at 98, it literally is shoot on sight with the Uruguayan and it will fly in. His card is currently only 700k and is a must-have for anyone looking to create a La Liga TOTS team.

Card to avoid? Real Madrid defensive midfielder Casemiro is a card I would avoid. Although his defensive stats are outstanding, he is not well-rounded enough. There are better alternative options that can play in that position at this current time in the game, such as Frankie De Jong. Casemiro’s Pace, Passing, and Shooting don’t quite cut it and his price reflects that, at only 100k for a 94-rated player.

Bundesliga FUT Team of the Season

Most exciting card? The Bundesliga’s most exciting card has to be the young Englishman Jadon Sancho, currently one of the highest-rated wingers in the game at 96. Costing around 2.5 million coins, he is worth every penny with 98 Dribbling and five-star Skill Moves. There is also the added bonus of being able to link him in with Premier League players such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right flank.

Biggest surprise? The biggest surprise is Leon Goretzka, as his original gold card is 84-rated with three-star Skills. Currently, the TOTS card has to be one of the best all-round CMs in the game. Rated 95 with every in-game stat above 90, Goretzka is currently worth 2.8 million. One of the biggest upgrades has to be the 4* Skill Moves, which has enhanced the card to be the complete midfielder.

Card to avoid? The German veteran centre-back Mats Hummels. Although his defensive stats are extremely good, it has been said time and time again that defenders need pace in the FIFA ‘meta’ to keep up with the forwards, and Hummels is far too slow at 76. Costing only 80k for a 93-rated TOTS player, no more explanation is needed as to why you should avoid Hummels.

Serie A FUT Team of the Season

Most exciting card? It wouldn’t be anyone other than Cristiano Ronaldo. He has been without a doubt the go-to striker for many competitors this year, whether that’s his normal gold card, TOTW or TOTS. Rating 98 and costing a hefty price of 5 million coins, he’s the ultimate out and out striker with 99 Shooting, 90 Physical, 95 Pace and 99 Heading Accuracy, he can do everything you need and more to score. CR7 also has the added bonus of being able to create a hybrid link with players such as Bruno Fernandes or Renato Sanches.

Biggest surprise? The biggest surprise is how good AC Milan’s Franck Kessie is in game, and how cheap he is – around 375k for a 93-rated CDM is an absolute bargain. It goes without saying that he is very under-rated and extremely well-rounded. With all attributes 86 and above, including 99 Physical, 91 Defending and 93 Dribbling, he is a bully in the centre of the park and exactly what you need to win the ball back.

Card to avoid? Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar (89-rated) has to be one of the worst TOTS cards across the top five leagues and one of the cheapest, costing only 35k. You massively need to avoid him. Of course, not only his Pace of 76 lets him down, but his Defending and Physical are also nowhere near the quality of other TOTS centre-backs. With the current meta, you definitely want to try and get other players from Serie A to play at centre-back, such as Juventus’ Juan Cuadrado or Theo Hernandez of AC Milan.

Ligue 1 FUT Team of the Season

Most exciting card? It has to be PSG’s Brazilian wonder Neymar. Rating 96 he is, without doubt, one of the best cards on the game right now. Costing around 9 million, Neymar is one of the most expensive players bar any of the stand-out ICONs such as Prime Moments R9 Ronaldo. He may seem pricey but the stats match the price with five-star Skill Moves and Weak Foot, 97 Pace, 95 Shooting and 99 Dribbling, including 99 Agility. He is the perfect ST and CAM so if you’re only of the lucky few you have 9 million coins spare, I would recommend you definitely get him in your starting XI.

Biggest surprise? There is no surprise that Lille’s Jonathan Bamba has been named in the TOTS after he received a Player of the Month card, however, it is surprising how good he is. Rating 92 and costing around 400k, Bamba is a very versatile card that can be used anywhere along the front line with his five-star Skill Moves and four-star Weak Foot. He is the perfect winger, extremely agile with 99 Pace. Give him the ball and just run, as no one will catch him. If you are someone who likes to play on the counter, he is your man.

Card to avoid? The card to avoid in Ligue 1 is Virgil van Dijk’s former centre-back partner Jose Fonte. Again, as I have always mentioned, pace is key for a centre-back on FIFA 21 and Fonte, like so many others, is too slow to compete with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Mohamed Salah and Marcus Rashford, with his Pace attribute only 76. Fonte is one of the higher-rated players in Ligue 1, but one of the lowest in price, costing around 75k for a 93-rated centre-back, which says it all.
