After weeks of anticipation, EA Sports have finally released the Winter Refresh for FIFA 20.
Following the close of the big European transfer windows, fans have been looking forward to seeing FIFA 20 updated to mirror current rosters ahead of the second half of the season.
As well as that, players to have shone in the first half of the 2019/20 campaign were set to be rewarded with improved ratings to reflect their performances.
However, this year things appear to be different. Instead of the full database getting a variety of rating changes, from +1 to +6 in some instances in FIFA 19, just the top 50 players from around the world to have made the biggest improvement have been upgraded. These players have all been handed an upgrade of at least +3.
But of the top 50 players just three come from Serie A, despite Italian football enjoying one of the closest title races in recent memory. So, who are the lucky trio?
Players who have improved by the same amount have been ranked based on their overall rating.
3. Nicolo Zaniolo (+3)
Current club: Roma
FIFA rating: 74 – 77
Key stat: Nicolo Zaniolo has completed 43 take-ons in Serie A this season.
Nicolo Zaniolo was enjoying himself in the first half of the Serie A season, helping Roma to fifth, and chasing a Champions League spot. His performances were worthy of an upgrade but fans will only be able to experience him on FIFA 20 for the remainder of the campaign, after the Italian suffered an ACL injury in Roma’s defeat to Juventus.
2. Merih Demiral (+3)
Current club: Juventus
FIFA rating: 74 – 77
Key stat: Merih Demiral averages 4.75 aerial duels won per 90 minutes in Serie A this season.
A summer signing from Sassuolo, Merih Demiral took time to break into the Juventus first team given the abundance of centre-back talent ahead of him. He finally did so in December, with strong performances enough to earn a FIFA 20 winter upgrade. However, like Zaniolo, Demiral is out for the remainder of the season with an ACL injury picked up in the same game. A cruel blow.
1. Lautaro Martinez (+3)
Current club: Inter Milan
FIFA rating: 81 – 84
Key stat: Lautaro Martinez has scored 16 goals in 28 games across all competitions for Inter Milan this season.
Inter Milan are doing well at the top of Serie A and Romelu Lukaku is receiving a lot of plaudits for his role, but you mustn’t forget Lautaro Martinez. The 22-year-old continues to improve especially alongside Lukaku and has recently been linked with a summer move to Barcelona.
