For those who don’t know, the Europe Cup is the secondary continental competition of FIBA, below the Basketball Champions League — much like UEFA’s Europa League in the footballing world. The 2022/23 Europe Cup is the eighth year of the competition, with defending champions Bahcesehir Koleji winning the title for the first time last season, gaining promotion to the Champions League.
As usual, the 2022/23 Europe Cup has been split into four different rounds. First came the qualifiers with 22 entering at the opening stage to be cut down to four across four qualification groups, with three lucky losers. They were joined in the first group stage by 18 teams to be eliminated from Champions League qualifying and the teams that had automatically booked their spot.
The 32 teams were then split into eight groups of four, where each team faces off twice in a round robin format. At the end of the first group stage — dubbed the regular season — the top two from each group qualified for the second round, another group stage this time consisting of just four groups. This is where we’re at now, with the first round of fixtures being paced.
With teams playing each other twice, the top two of the four groups advance to the quarter-finals.
Then we move into the playoffs with two-legged ties in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, to be decided overall by the aggregate score. The 2022/23 Europe Cup final is scheduled to be played in April 2023.
