Feyenoord: The surprise package no one is talking about?

In the Eredivisie this season, eyes will immediately be drawn to Ajax at the top of the table. The defending champions have won five of their six games, drawing the other, scoring 27 goals and conceding just one. But, four points behind them (with a game in hand) are a Feyenoord side that have quietly been going about their business.

Arne Slot’s men have won four of their five games so far, only dropping points in a 3-1 defeat to Utrecht before the international break. However, instead of crumbling, Feyenoord have regrouped and used that loss to start an emphatic run.

Feyenoord have won their past two games by an aggregate scoreline of 7-1, beating Heerenveen 3-1 in midweek and PSV 4-0 last weekend. Away from home. Before that game PSV were top of the league and perfect after four matches, but Feyenoord saw the trip to Eindhoven as the right time to make their mark.

Only PSV and Ajax have scored more goals in the Eredivisie so far this season than Feyenoord’s 14, though they have both played one game more, while only Ajax have a better defence. Feyenoord also have the joint-top scorer in Bryan Linssen, whose five goals sees him level with Ajax’s Sebastien Haller (who has played more minutes). It’s still very early, but another win against NEC could build the momentum Feyenoord need to trouble Ajax.
