Can Rangers qualify for the Europa League knockout stages at Feyenoord?

Published: 16:40, 28 November 2019

Rangers could book their place in the Europa League Round of 32 on Thursday evening by beating Feyenoord.

A victory for Steven Gerrard’s side, combined with a win or a draw for Young Boys against Porto, will see the Scottish giants go through to the knockout stages with a game to spare.

Meanwhile, Feyenoord – coached by former Rangers manager Dick Advocaat – must win if they are to have any chance of qualifying on the final matchday.

Read on for our preview, team news, key men, possible line-ups, predictions and more.

Ones to watch

Feyenoord: Steven Berghuis

Feyenoord captain Berghuis has been one of the team’s standout performers this season, contributing multiple goals and assists from wide areas. However, he has scored just once in his four Europa League outings so far. Advocaat will be relying on the Dutchman to get the hosts going. He may be their best hope of keeping their qualification dream alive.

Key stat: Berghuis has scored 10 goals so far this season, including seven in 13 Eredivisie appearances.

Rangers: Alfredo Morelos

Morelos is enjoying another unstoppable season in front of goal. After scoring eight goals in Europa League qualifying, the striker has found the net three times in four group stage games, and he’ll be eager to add another against Feyenoord to secure smooth passage to the knockout rounds. If Feyenoord are unable to track Morelos’ runs, they could be in for a long night.

Key stat: Morelos has scored 22 goals in 26 appearances across all competitions this season.

Team news

Feyenoord

Advocaat will be without Rick Karsdorp (groin), Sven van Beek (ankle) and Edgar Ié (hamstring). Jan-Arie van der Heijden and Nicolai Jørgensen are doubts after picking up knocks, but former Swansea City midfielder Leroy Fer is likely to start.

Confirmed XI: Marsman; Geertruida, Botteghin, Senesi, Malacia; Toornstra, Fer, Kökçü; Berghuis, Sinisterra, Larsson.

Rangers

Jermain Defoe has been ruled out with a groin injury. Borna Barisic is also a doubt with a groin problem, meaning Jon Flanagan could start at left-back.

Confirmed XI: McGregor; Tavernier, Goldson, Helander, Barisic; Kamara, S. Davis, Jack; Ojo, Morelos, Kent.

Squawka prediction

Gerrard’s men have been impressive in Europe this season, but Feyenoord have their own motivations to win, which will make this one tricky for Rangers. Still, if Morelos gets enough chances, the visitors should score and leave with at least a point.

Scoreline prediction: Feyenoord 1-1 Rangers
