Istanbul will hold its breath on Sunday as heavyweights Galatasaray and Fenerbahce clash in a bid to jump back into the Süper Lig title race (4pm kick-off, UK time).
Few fixtures capture the imagination quite like this one, but extra significance is given to the fact that the two sides are down in sixth and eighth, respectively, sandwiching Besiktas. It’s not been going well for the Istanbul giants this season.

Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
Usually a title-deciding blockbuster, the latest edition of Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce may be more about who steals a march on the race of European football. The two sides — along with Besiktas — are languishing down in mid-table with a considerable early gap opening up between themselves and leaders Trabzonspor, who have taken advantage of Istanbul’s failings, going unbeaten across their first 12 games.
Galatasaray beat Bursaspor 5-2 last time out but that was only a friendly. In league play, they have been wildly inconsistent. Fenerbahce, meanwhile, are winless in their last four, losing three times during that run. Who will stop the rot here? That’s anyone’s guess.
- Galatasaray (vs Bursaspor): Cipe; Caglayan, Ozturk, Marcao, Van Aanholt; Assuncao; Kilinc, Kara, Babacan, Babel; Diagne.
- Fenerbahce (vs Kayserispor): Ozer; Tisserand*, Kim, Szalai; Sangare, Yandas, Zajc, Meyer, Kadioglu; Kahveci, Berisha.
Arda Turan and Sacha Boey are Galatasaray’s only injury absentees. Fenerbahce lost Marcel Tisserand last time out — he’ll join Enner Valencia, Luiz Gustavo and Altay Bayindir on a growing injury list.
Players to watch:
Galatasaray: No side in the Süper Lig’s top seven has scored fewer goals than Galatasaray’s 18 so far and it’s clear that Fatih Terim needs a goalscorer if his side is to compete. Perhaps Mbaye Diagne can fulfill that role? The Senegalese striker has just one goal and one assist to his name in league play so far this season, but has been restricted to only four starts. However, he did score a hat-trick during the recent friendly against Bursaspor — with Galatasaray struggling in the final third, Terim could do worse than gambling on Diagne and the confidence he’ll take from that performance.
Fenerbache: Slowly but surely, Diego Rossi has started showing his best form. On loan from LAFC, the Uruguayan forward was the MLS Golden Boot winner in 2020. He hasn’t quite hit those heights for Fenerbahce yet, but does have two goals and three assists in just 535 minutes of Süper Lig action so far. Rossi is terrifyingly fast and a devastating dribbler. He should prove a tough test for this usually resolute Galatasaray backline.
