Fenerbahce will face perhaps the biggest test of their EuroLeague season so far when they host Real Madrid in Istanbul on Friday night. The Turkish side lead the way in the EuroLeague regular season after 10 games with a record of 9-1, holding one more than any other team – though both teams with eight victories have played a game more. It’s form they have matched in the Basketball Super League — Turkey’s domestic competition — with eight wins from eight there.

But focusing on the EuroLeague, Fenerbahce opened the campaign with five straight wins, beating Bayern Munich, Maccabi Tel Aviv, LDLC ASVEL, Valencia and Anadolu Efes, with the latter the only team to beat them domestically, claiming victory in the Presidential Cup. Barcelona then became the second team to beat Fenerbahce this season with an 81-80 victory, but that couldn’t really stop the progress. Since that defeat, Fenerbahce have gone on to secure wins over Crvena zvezda, Panathinaikos, AS Monaco and Olimpia Milano, the latter seeing them coming from five points down at half-time.

Real Madrid are one of four EuroLeague teams who entered round 11 with seven wins from their opening 10 games and only trailed second-placed Olympiacos on points difference (though they have dropped slightly following Thursday’s results). The most-successful club in EuroLeague history, Real Madrid opened their 2022/23 campaign with victory over Panathinaikos but then won just one of their next four games, beating Crvena zvezda while suffering defeats to Barcelona, Olympiacos and Virtus Bologna.

With a record of 2-3, some fans may have started to worry but Real Madrid have bounced back in some style. Their current run started with a win over Olimpia Milano and continued with victories against Crvena zvezda, ALBA Berlin, Valencia and Partizan. Real Madrid’s win streak of five is the joint-longest in the EuroLeague this season alongside Fenerbahce’s start to the campaign, so they will be looking to beat the Turkish side in more ways than one on Friday.
